Abstract

It is against the background of the Coliandro-Nikita books that I will examine Febbre gialla (1997), published by Edizioni EL of Trieste, who specialize in books for children and young people, and who had published the first edition of Nikita as a separate volume. The focus of my analysis will be the representation in these works of Chinese immigrants, taken in the context of the author's play with the social diversity of speech types, and with particular reference to a degree of ambiguity between stylized language and linguistic parody which is present in such representations. To this end I will draw both on Bakhtin's essay, "Discourse in the Novel" (1975), and on post-colonial critical theory.
