Abstract

An examination of possible links between the tradition of oral performance in Italian popular culture and Dante's portrayals of Francesca, Pia and Piccarda in the Commedia. In all three episodes, the theme of the indissoluble bond of marriage provides a focus for the exploration of tensions underlying family politics in a patristic society.
