Abstract

Long inaccessible, the Gubbio palace and its studiolo deserve more attention and Cheles makes a welcome contribution by placing Gubbio and Urbino in an interactive context. One of the book's strengths is its attention to both the content and the effect of the words visible everywhere in the room. Cheles bypasses many stylistic and political implications of the room's visual complexity, preferring to mount a traditional, predictable but solid examination of a "learned programme."
